Nope, I think it's the real thing.

Instead of starting a new debate right off the bat, I think this time let's tackle a brain twister. Sam, don't answer this, you already know it.

If you burn ten candles, there will be enough tallow left for you to make one candle. Therefore, if you have one thousand candles, how many candles can you make from the tallow left over after burning them?

    Have fun solving.

are you sure its the real thing?!

    Dan-

    is it 100?

I'm not sure, but I'd be prepared to submit it at the real thing, just on the safe side.

And no, it's not 100. Good guess though-- you need to think outside the box.

i hate those kinds fo riddles!

    HH

PS. are the candles the same size?

  • At 7:32 AM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

Yes, the candles are the same size. The trick is not two half-candles can each be used as one candle; just think outside the box. You have one thousand candles. By burning ten of them, you can make one candle from what's left over. So how many candles maximum can you make in this way from the thousand candles you have?

    Dan

  • At 7:36 AM, Blogger Gabriella Reed said…

as many as i want that is below 100?

    HH

  • At 8:47 AM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

No, no, MAXIMUM. That's as many as you can possibly make. 100 is a good guess on face value, but there's something you are missing.

I think I know the answer but I don't want to give it away here so I posted it on my blog. I hope it does not spoil the fun if Heather decides to go look at my blog before she figures it out. I still did not explain how I got the answer, so that will at least leave you the challenge of trying to figure out that part.

Here's a riddle for you guys, i thought it was rather funny.

Romeo and Juliet are found dead on the floor in a bedroom. When they were discovered, there were pieces of glass and some water on the floor. The only furniture in the room is a shelf and a bed. The house in is a remote location, away from everything except for the nearby railway track. What caused the death of Romeo and Juliet?

have fun with that. and don't look it up.

-The train was rumbling by and it made the lights go out. Romeo steped on the bed to examine the light and asked Juliet for a glass of water. Since a bed isn't the steayist surface, some water got splashed on both their hands. At that moment the train passed and the lights came back on, sending electricity flowing through both their bodies, since water is a good conductor. Both lovers fell to the floor, the glass shatered, and the remaining water was spilled on the floor.

    Sam

PS. And good ridence of them.

  • At 6:48 AM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

No, you're going off the wrong track. Any number of candles you burn, the candles you get are a tenth of the original number; hence 10 candles burned = 1 candle, 20 candles burned = 2 candles, 100 candles burned =10 candles, etc. But there's something more. Forget about the candle size or other statistics. This is a purely mathematical problem.

sam: wrong. guess again. (how in tarnation did you even come up with that answer?)

-Is this the one where the window is proped open with an ice cube?

    Sam

  • At 10:10 AM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

OK, I'll give you the answer.

You start off with a thousand candles. You burn them all. Since you are able to make one candle for every ten candles burned, you can therefore make one hundred candles from the thousand.

But that's not all. You can make ten more candles by burning the hundred you have now, and you can burn the ten to make one. All in all, then, you have made:

    111 candles.

Here's another riddle for you; this one might be easier.

Sid Shady gets a new job at a manufacturing company. But the manufacturing company suspects Shady of stealing from them and hires policemen to watch him. Every night Sid Shady leaves work with a wheelbarrow full of scrap lumber and other odds and ends; and every night the police search him and his cargo without finding any stolen goods. Sid was indeed stealing from the company, but the question is:

    What was he stealing?

It didn't have anything to do with the water, the glass, or the furniture. They both died of apoplexy...well, maybe not, that's hereditary...or a severe chill.

    Hehehohohaha!

PS. Don't sue me for copyright over this, please.
