Merry Christmas!

Comments below are nearing the double-digits! I hope you all enjoy a joyful Christmas with your families.

And how is Stowe coming?

Is anyone reading fun books over break? I'm planning to read Eragon, and I've been rereading The Chronicles of Narnia--I'm currently on my favorite The Silver Chair. I also have plenty of school reading to do.

if you read Eragon you won't be able to go a whole semester without reading its sequal Eldest. that one's great too. has anyone seen the movie? my bro went to see and said it was nothing like the book. okay i take that back.... the character's names were the same and it was the same basic story line. but he said it still was different from the book! i hate it when directors and producers do that!!!

i loved the silver chair!! alathough i think i still liked the lion the witch and the wardrobe or the horse and his boy more..... i don't know. something like that.

i'm gonna be gone all next week... so don't talk about anything too interesting while i'm gone(our grandparents don't have internet access=( but we'll still have fun!!)

Merry Christmas!!!!! and a happy new year!(2007....wow...time really flies)

To continue our discussion from two posts back:

Unless you can claim to have tried all other kinds of food and that your opinion isn't biased, you can't really prove that Italian food is the best in the world.

    Dan

    P. S. Also, you can't really prove that everyone thinks the same way you do.

So, summing up another discussion from three posts back:

1: If the slaves had been kidnapped, they were not real slaves.

2: A slave could run away to preserve his family.

3: A slave could run away from an abusive master or a master who wanted him to commit unbiblical acts.

4: A slave could run away from an unfair master.

5: I back these claims, when necessary, on the grounds that the Black slaves were either war captives or strangers and sojourners.

6: Just because it would be biblically lawful under these circumstances, it may not always be right, considering the convictions of one's conscience.

-1.Most Italian food has the essence of cooking in it (cheese).
-2.Most Italian food has earth's most perfect fruit in it (tomato).
-3.A lot of Italian food has earth's most perfect grain product in it (pasta).
-4.A lot of Italian food has meat in it.
-5.All Italian food has onions in it.
-6. Four basic food groups there, health, tasty, the best.

    Sam

PS. By "food" the author was refering to main courses.

hah, we haven't even started on italian desserts! lol

yes, if you read eragon you will HAVE to read eldest...very good books in my opinion

and as far as the movie, from my "research" hehe, i find that the directors follow a similar story line but they don't do the book justice. like they don't go as deep as the book goes. Basically it's a much more shallow movie than the book was.

annyway, for all of you, i have some sobering news...i'm in a calculus class at Ivy Tech and the class meets on tuesdays and thursdays...unfortunately..right in the middle of our literature class...

    so...

    we have 3 options

    1. I quit the class

    2. We move the class

    3. I read the books, comment on the blog, and turn in homework but never show up for class

    :(

oh well, tis life, hopefully something will work or there may be no more andrew...

    on a different note..

    happy new year!!

    ;)

    Yeah, really, Sam...

But you still haven't proved that Italian food is the best.

    1. You have not proved that cheese is the essence of (good) cooking.

    2. You have not proved that the tomato is Earth's most perfect fruit.

    3. You have not proved that pasta is Earth's most perfect grain product.

    4. You have not proved that Italian food is the ONLY kind of food that has cheese, tomatoes, pasta, meat and onions in it.

    5. You have not proved that cheese, tomatoes, pasta, meat, and onions are always good in any sort of combination.

    6. You have not proved that tasty food is always the best.

7: You have only referred to main courses without proving that all Italian food is main courses. What about appetizers, snacks and the rest?

    8. You have not proved that every kind of pasta is good.

    9. You have not proved that every kind of meat is good.

    10. You have not proved that every kind of tomato is good.

    11. You have not proved that every kind of onion is good.

    12. Even if you are not trying to prove that every kind of the above-mentioned foodstuffs is good, you have not specified WHICH kind is good.

    13. Besides, you have not said that they are ALWAYS good.

14: You have not, in any way, shape, or form, had any exhaustive experience representing the whole of Italian cuisine.

I therefore believe that you have not served to prove your point at all.

    Dan

    P. S. It's not good debate etiquette to threaten people who don't agree with you.

i believe i must enlighten our poor friend daniel carr who has needlessly blasted us italians with pointless statements to no effect..

italian is the best mainly becuase it's for everyone!

incredible appetizers for the non-diary, vegitarian, meat and seafood lovers, etc.

delicious soups and salads, for the same groups

delectable main dishes for every style; spicy, mild, meaty, vegitarian, cheesy, crunchy, soft, wild, cold, hot, big, small, etc.

i haven't even begun to list the other benefits of italian food yet...or even desserts...

    so...
    refute that...
    lol

I also fail to see any examples of something better. While this isn't necessary it shows that you have little faith in your position.

    Sam

PS. What do you know about debate etiquette you moron! jk.

  • At 1:54 PM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

    Andrew,

I will admit the benefits of Italian food are good, but you still haven't proved that those benefits aren't unequalled or surpassed. You haven't even stated any benefits of Italian food that American food (or any other food for that matter) does not have.

    Sam,

I don't need to give counterexamples, because you have the burden of proof. I only need to prove that you haven't given sufficient evidence to prove your point, which I believe I have done.

    Now to both of you,

Basically, what you have done is given assertions without anything else. You have not offered any solid backup to your assertions, or any proof that those asserted characteristics are exclusive to, or at their highest in, Italian food.

So unless you have any concrete, conclusive evidence in support of your position (which I haven't seen), you have not proved your point.

And anyway, you haven't said anything that proves my previous fourteen points wrong.

    Dan

P.S. Heather, please back me up on this!

    I'M BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

sorry to spoil all your fun yals, but her majesty the queen of.... of....... debate (not) has returned!!

okay. let me start on the hard ones:

    Sam:

i have been gone for only the past week and a half. not a whole year. so don't cry=)

i believe i DID state that AMERICAN food is pretty good. so i do have a counter..... food. now i'm not saying its necessarily healthy (in fact i DO support that it is one of the most unhealthy foods in the world, all that grease and stuff) but i DO think that pizza (which isn't italian) is very good and can have all that spice and taste you want. now the card board pizzas aren't very healthy, but pizza hut is VERY good. and you can (unlike italion where you HAVE to have either the wheat or white spaghetti) have the pizza in different variations. such as? well you can have pan crust, stuffed crust, and thin crust! and i haven't even gotten to the toppings! there are more than 50 ways to top a pizza. and you can have white sauce or tomato sauce. or you can go without cheese, or you can go to italy and order spaghetti and only have 2 different choices.

did you ever think about what would happen to an italion person who was ellergic to pasta or tomato sauce? i think they would die..... seriously.

don't get me wrong, i do love italion..... its just not as good as you make it out to be. so i'm being a good citizen and miking sure no one is misled..... any questions?

    Daniel:

i think that since they ask for a counter..... food, we should give it to them.

although in all fairness, we should look at the taste buds of all of us and see that our taste has been aquired to us by God since our birth and therefore almost no one in the world will like the exact things you do. taste is part of the things that define a specific person, not a whole nation. so not all italions will like italion food, they just have to eat it all the time. just like not all AMERICANS like AMERICAN food.

i agree with you, daniel. but i don't really know what else to say.... sorry=(

    Andrew:

WHAT?!?!?!?!?! YOU'RE LEAVING?!?!?! i vote: move the lit class. and if you quite i'll sue..... okay maybe i won't. i'll just be mad at you =) when do these painfully agravating classes start? what time do the pitifully depressing classes start? what will you learn in the incomparably, incandecently, stupidifying classes?..... okay that was way fun, you should try using weird language some times guys!.....okay back on target. when do the....... classes end? this is like the next natural disaster you guys!!! why am i the only one geeking out about it!!!! this is aweful...... i have said my peace.

okay. down to the really serious stuff.

i disagree that italion is for every one. some people are ellergic. and some have never heard of it before. like those people in sudan and madagascar. i won't mention the others, but it most certainly is NOT for everyone. sure it covers a wide variety..... but not as much as pizza =)

well thats all for tonight. its about 11 and i'm about to start snoring over the keyboard.

    H.H.: queen of.......debate (not)

  • At 8:20 PM, Blogger Gabriella Reed said…

i forgot to mention that there is such a thing as salad pizza and dessert pizza..... although i'm not adventurous enough to try it.

  • At 9:47 AM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

Heather, great to have you back.
-For your information pizza IS Italian. Sure it was commertialized in America, but originally it was what the Italians did with their leftovers, make some dough, through on some sause, through on your leftovers, pop it in the oven and voila! (or Mama-mia) a wounderfully tasty meal made from leftovers. I know this because my great-uncle's friends aunt was Italian and that's what she said!
-About the only food Americans invented was the potato chip; everything else is from other countries with more grese.
-I have yet to hear of an alergy to tomatoes or pasta.
-People in third world countries would LOVE Italian food if someone gave it to them. (admittedly they would probably love ANY food you gave them.)

    Sam

PS. OH NO, ANDREW MY LIFE IS EMPTY WITHOUT YOU! DON'T LEAVE! ANY THING BUT THAT! *deep notes of sarcasum*

PPS. Seriously, my post is WAY more interesting then this.

  • At 10:53 AM, Blogger Gabriella Reed said…

    wow..... i never knew that.

i have a friend who can't eat any white pasta and my one of my sister's friends was (i don't know if she still is) elergic (really i shouldn't say elergic because it has something to do with the digestive system) to tomatoes. therefore, when she would eat pizza she would order it with white sause, not regular. i don't know if they still do that cause that was about 5 years ago..... but the proof still counts.

yeah, they would probably eat raw fish if you gave it to them.

    Heather

    P.S.......very funny.

P.S.S.don't you mean "than this"? and i'm not too sure. it'll be cool to look back and tell my friends that i had friends in highschool that would agrue if a toothpick was better than a Q tip.-lol-

Dear Sam and Andy (please don't take the pun seriously),

What my argument boils down to is this: there is no way to prove that one food is best than all others simply on the basis of taste and diversity. I will admit you could make a case for Italian food being the best if it is more nutritious and maybe also easier easier to make(quicker, less complicated, less expensive) than any other ethnic food group. But for now there is no solid proof.

Notwithstanding, whether a food is "better" than other foods or not depends mainly on opinion. A Chinese person who has been brought up among good Chinese cuisine will probably be apprehensive toward American food. An American who has known nothing but American food, even the best or worst American food, will probably be apprehensive upon his first encounter with, say, Mexican food. But the point is that most of this issue (notwithstanding blatantly unhealthy food) depends upon opinion.

Now you may say, "I think Italian food is the best, and lots of people agree with me; therefore, since only opinion counts, I can say truthfully that Italian food is the best, because I like it."
I don't think so. Your opinion cannot be justifiably forced upon other people as the arbitrary standard (which is the only way Italian food could be indisputably called the best food). And even if other people agree with you, it still doesn't make a difference. There is no way to prove, simply on the basis of majority or minority, that any opinion is indisputably right or wrong.

    Dan

P.S. If you want any live examples of this uncertainty of opinion, consider the prevalent pro-evolution bias in the scientific field as a whole, and the so-called South American spitbucket.

    Sam

PS. Italian is still the best and you know it.

PPS. The above statement had to be made and it's no use arguing any further 'cause Andrew and I ain't budgeing.

PPPS. Now that this is solved, how about arguing on my post.

  • At 5:05 PM, Blogger Gabriella Reed said…

w/e.....but i'm surprised that you said nothing about what i had said earlier. that "a person's taste depends on the way God has created them" and "a person's taste makes them different and UNIQUE" and you can't change that either. and even though you and andrew agree that italion is the best, you still don't agree on ALL sides of food. i gaurantee it. and i don't think that taste is necessarily hereditary. both my parents are chocolate LOVERS and 3 of my siblings will hardly touch it.... so yeah...

  • At 7:50 AM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

    Sam and Andy,

You still have not proved that Italian food is the best. And what's this about saying I know it? because I don't. And neither do you. It may be the best food you ever had, but you CANNOT and HAVE NOT in any way, shape or form proven conclusively that Italian food is the best on Earth. That being said, I rest my case.

    Dan
