Since you say I never post...
Here's a picture of my first Christmas tree. Look closely and you can see my cat, Lydia, inspecting it.

Nice tree. Is it a real one or one of those fake ones that come in boxes?

    Dan

P.S. Not that there's anything inherently wrong with a fake tree--my family has owned two of them

what kind of cat is Lydia? how'd you get the name? how is she? i love cats=)

we have a fake tree and its really great having one cause we've had it my entire life so many memories come with it. and i heard a fake tree is easier to water-lol.

how tall is your tree? i'm guessing.... by the size of your cat......approx. 3 feet. although i'm bad at guessing.

Where's your nativity scene? And your Advent wreath? (Yes, I am displaying both, as well as an ornament that looks suspiciously like Santa).

I decided I had enough penguin ornaments this year to do a penguin-only tree. It's too bad I don't have a digital camera to put a picture of it up. (FYI, in that Santa ornament, Santa's holding a penguin). I also have a dog-themed wreath.

Once again, Elizabeth corrupts the youth of the church. At least this time I'm not making them drink fake blood.

Interesting discussion about trees, though I think that when the chips are down, a real tree can easily beat a fake one. One year we cut down an evergreen tree that was in the middle of what was becoming our orchard, and we decided to use it for the year's Christmas tree. But it looked a bit smaller outside the house than it did inside. Our living room has what some people call a cathedral ceiling or something like that-- slopes up on each side to a peak down the middle of the room. The peak is about 15 or 16 feet off the floor. But the point is, when we got that tree in the door and stook it upright, it almost reached the top of the ceiling! Yeah, pretty big, and it didn't look so enormous outside the house. That had to be the best Christmas tree we ever had.

    well...

    if you have cathedral ceilings

and room for a humongous christmas tree

and amazing vacuum cleaners to get all the needles

    and an immunity to prickliness...

then a real live christmas tree is for you.

we have none of the above...

    but...

we get live christmas trees anyway!!!

    so much fun...
especially picking up the pine needles...
    [note sarcasm]

lol, i would like to have a fake tree becuase it would cut down the hassle of getting a tree...though i'd have to admit going and picking out a tree is kinda cool, it's just...well...is it worth it?
    dunno...

quaintlittlehead is definitley Elizabeth Strong, and I have no clue how she got this site...i guess it just means we're popular ;-) hehe

P.S. uh, sam..."lovely" is suppossed to be MY response, NOT yours...I have it copywrited u know...

    P.P.S. btw, nice tree meg

P.P.P.S. oh Heather, no one in our family is a cat person except me :P but one day a cool cat just showed up at our door and we kept it ;)

isn't it a pain having to water a tree that is perfectly fine where it is?

instead of great memories of cutting down or buying a christmas tree, we have great memories setting it up. i'll never forget each set of bros and sis' arguing over where each tree branch went on the tree.... what memories!

    andrew:
    who's elizabeth strong?

i hate it when peeps take my lines!... but then again i don't care.

do you still have the cat?

  • At 9:43 AM, Blogger Gabriella Reed said…

oee: what does your tree smell like? our tree has.... a good smell. so i can't really picture a bda smelling tree.

    p.s.kk....whats all this about blood?

  • At 10:06 AM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

    Heather,
The tree was NOT perfectly fine where it was; it was right in the middle of our orchard, which was at least part of the reason why we cut it down.

Yes, it just occured to me that "quaintlittlehead" was Elizabeth Strong, but I have no idea about what she said about drinking fake blood.

    Dan

  • At 3:41 PM, Blogger Andrew said…

lol, what does a fake tree smell like?? couldn't tell ya...lol ;-)

yup, we still have the cat, it's hilarious cuz it acts as if we made a business agreement with it or something, where it gets to use our house and we get the entertainment of a cat...lol

sry, yeah elizabath is someone at our church, and I know how she found the site...see meg is apart of this purdue site that's called, Purduegatory, (basically the years of pergatory at purdue...lol) and quaintlittlehead is also a member..and that's the connection...

have no clue about fake blood either...

  • At 6:48 PM, Blogger Gabriella Reed said…

Dan:whats wrong with a tree in the middle of an orchard? at least it wasn't lonely out there and was still alive.

oee:i like the smell of our tree BECAUSE we keep it in a card board box...... did your tree box have any snakes or spiders in it? who knows, they could've gotten in there to get warm!-lol-

andrew:what color is the cat? we had a calico cat but the neighbor lady complained about soxy eating the birds(of course the lady was a bird lover and had no idea what cats were made for-lol-)....so we gave her(our cat that is) to some friends of ours out in the country where she got her tail chopped off=(
    but she's still cute!

So elusive allusions to drinking fake blood seems to have made ME popular...

When Meg and I taught the 3 and 4 year old Sunday school together, I decided our lesson on the plagues of Egypt should include drinking Kool-aid with gummi fish in it to represent the transformed Nile river. Little Maria McDeavitt seemed so proud when her mother asked her what we did in class that day to say, "We drank blood!"

And thus concludes my plan to get myself barred from ever teaching 3 and 4 year old Sunday school again. If only I had a plan that could get me out of teaching French.

My tree is artificial, but I love it anyway. Lydia loves the cardboard box it came in.

Dan--what do you grow in your orchard?

  • At 11:14 AM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

    Heather,
The tree was in such a way that it disrupted the order. The trees are oriented in rows and columns, and the tree was not following the pattern. Also, it was an evergreen tree, amd evergreens take up a lot of space with all the little branches sticking out. It was a BIG evergreen tree too, so it took up even more space. And it was soaking up the nutrition that our orchard trees could use. And chances are it would have been cut down by now anyway; my dad cut down several evergreen bushes around our house because of a harmful blight that would use them for secondary hosts and infect our orchard. On the positive side of things, it was the best Christmas tree we ever had. And we didn't have to go out of our way to buy it--it came with the house when we moved in.

    Meg,
I'm not sure about everything we grow in the orchard in the north yard, but I do know we have cherry, apple, peach, apricot and pear trees. We also have two pawpaw trees and a persimmon tree in our south yard.

    elizabeth:lol!

Dan:well the poor little tree couldn't help where it grew! when it was little you could've re-located it.

    you have apple trees?mmmmm!!!

  • At 6:29 PM, Blogger Andrew said…

haha, i think pointless arguments are hilarious :D

we have one apple tree, and one year we actually got apples! and then the apple tree next door was cut down, and we haven't got any since... :(

  • At 8:42 PM, Blogger Gabriella Reed said…

i love pointless arguments! they're the funnest! and it doesn't really matter which side wins...

....ok you lost me on that one...

  • At 10:39 AM, Blogger Andrew said…

    *sigh*
time to go into an in depth explanation...lol ;-)

    statement #1

    we have an apple tree

    Statement #2

our neighbors have an apple tree

Becuase there are only two trees together there isn't a lot of polination going on, so we normally don't get very many apples...
    but
one year we got a lot and so we had homemade apples sauce, apple crisp, caramel apples, we could go out and just grab one and eat it...it was awesome!

    so

    statment #3

our neighbors cut down their apple tree

so, now there is no polination so the few apples we get are merely appetizers for squirrels...

    :(

    better?

  • At 2:18 PM, Blogger Gabriella Reed said…

much much better.... in depth explanations that don't have huge words go well with me-lol-

  • At 6:18 AM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

    Heather,
We have only been living here for a little less than eight years, and the big tree was quite a few years back. The point is, it was already big when we bought the house, so we couldn't really relocate it except to the Christmas tree stand or to the bonfire. So we relocated it to the Christmas tree stand, and what a Christmas tree it was. It's better than letting it sit in our orchard and soak up all the sunshine and rainwater and nutrients that our fruit trees need. And it's a lot more convenient too, in the long run.

-A pawpaw is eliptical, green (at least some verieties), with white insides and brown marble sized seeds. It tastes like a cross between banana, mango, passion fruit, and custerd i.e. it's its own fruit and you have to taste it to know what it's like.

-Okay, Heather's never heard of a pawpaw, never had a plum, have you, perchance, heard of a peach? Or pomagranit? Maybe grapes? Let's make a list and see what we come up with.

    Sam

  • At 8:14 AM, Blogger Gabriella Reed said…

i LOVE grapes and juicy peaches, i've never tried a pomagranit, and i've had a kiwi once but i didn't really like it because it didn't have much of a taste let alone its own taste(but kiwi flavored stuff is good). ummm....i've never had dates.... i don't know what else. do make a list. i wanna know what i'm missing out on.

  • At 9:29 AM, Blogger Lemony Snicket said…

    Heather,
You and Orlena seem to be saying that you dislike pineapple core because of its texture. Even though I think the texture is one of the best parts, the flavor is good too. You should try it again next time you buy a fresh pineapple.

Also, have you ever had a fresh peach? They're really good. Pomegranates are round red fruits that look kind of like onions. But if you cut them open and discard the flesh, you can eat the seeds. The seeds are red and juicy (if you can comprehend such a thing as a juicy seed). They're pretty good. Dates are really sweet and rich. I've heard that fresh bananas are actually juicy.

So, on to the fruits we haven't listed yet--

Nectarines (kind of like a peach except with smooth skin and no hair)

    Apricots (fresh ones are yummy)

Papayas (another of those exotic tropical fruits, also really good)

Starfruit (haven't had one of those in a long time)

Coconuts (maybe not a fruit, but still good when fresh)

Leechee nuts (Asian grape-sized fruit with a kind of tough skin, peel the skin off and there's really sweet flesh around the seed, kind of like grape texture)

Persimmons (Lots of different kinds. Asian ones are really big and really sweet)

Mangoes (tough skin, but really mellow and juicy insides, huge pit)

Tomatoes (rather obscure fruit, red with semi-liquid insides. Very popular in Italy)

Figs (one of my favorites. I've only had dried ones, though)

i just had fresh pinapple a few days ago and(in the process of eating the good stuff) i had some core on the tip.... i nearly gagged! it was one of the most disguisting things i've ever tasted. it was hard and had a nasty taste like you would find in cough medicine.... although not the same nasty taste.

i've never really had much fresh fruit. i've had a fresh grape and cherry. but i'm not a big cherry fan.

i really can't comprehend a juicy seed.... they're normally hard.

i hate it when you say flesh. it sounds like you're eating a person! and thats not too appetizing to me considering i'm not a canible.

i haven't tried any of the fruts you mentioned.... although i must say that tomatoes are the most discusting fruits i have ever tasted, smelled and looked at! thats the only fruit on that list that i have tried and i hate it. the only form i like tomatoes in is ketchup. and oee can tell you all how much my fam likes ketchup=)-lol-

well how much reading have you all done? i'm getting on 3 times today in your honor you guys!!=) miss you all!!!

-Okay Andrew, get in here and lets argue them into the ground.
-Italian food is the best on earth! Don't try to deny it, there simply is none better! If you dissagree at least give an alternative alonge with some exaples of Italian food that in your opinion is bad.

i never said i hated it! i actually like some ittalion. just not all itallion. i don't really like chicken alfredo. i LOVE spaghetti. but seriously i haven't really eaten much itallion. and bread sticks are the best thing that has ever happened to America since the invention of toilet paper! so yeah, i don't really like itallion. but i do like spaghetti. and i can't really think of any other ittalion foods at the moment.... so maybe i shouldn't even be arguing about this since i'm not adventurous when it comes to food=)

    my alternative? american. period!

what chapter are yals on? i'm on... i think i'm on 21. but i'm not too sure.
